Description
“How do I become a model?”
The message usually arrives the same way, as if there’s one door, one application, one person whose job is to say yes. The industry isn’t built that neatly. A new model might get discovered by an agency, submit directly, answer a casting, build a portfolio with photographers, make content for local businesses, or travel to markets where her look is new. Every one of those routes can lead to paid work. Every one of them can also burn a year when the model doesn’t understand what the market is buying.
I should say up front that I’m on the other side of this. I own the studios, I hire the models, and I’m the one deciding whether a production’s money is well spent on the person in front of the camera. So read this knowing where I stand, then judge it on what actually happens on a production day.
This isn’t a book about getting discovered. It’s about becoming useful to a market: finding the buyer with a real reason to choose you, building the proof that buyer needs, and becoming someone people can work with safely and more than once.
Inside
- What each market actually buys: fashion, commercial, beauty, e-commerce, fitness, glamour, promotional, art and creator work, and why a rejection tells you less than you think
- Agency, independent and hybrid careers, and what to ask before you sign anything
- A written boundary document, a working name, and a public identity you control
- Preparation, the model bag, posing decisions, and taking direction on set
- Digitals and a portfolio that prove one market instead of a pile of nice photographs
- Test shoots and TFP, agency submissions, castings, and where independent work really comes from
- The traveling model: routes, anchor clients, tour rates, holding fees, and payment before the camera comes out
- Rates, expenses, invoices, contracts, releases, usage, and the AI permission line every release now needs
- The fifteen-minute check that runs on every booking, and the scams it stops
- Professional conduct, repeat clients, and a dated ninety-day plan

No guide can promise you an agency contract or a full-time income, and I won’t. What I can give you is a clear way to decide what you’re trying to do, what you’re willing to do, and what a legitimate next step looks like.
The shoot is the agreement. Learn the agreement first.
